About NEMI

Learn about our mission, history, and the dedicated team behind the Non-European Migrant Initiative.

Our Mission and Vision

NEMI’s mission is to promote inclusion, equality, and opportunity for non-European migrants in Ireland. We envision an Ireland where migrants from all backgrounds are empowered to thrive and participate fully in civic, cultural, and economic life. Our vision is rooted in the belief that a diverse Ireland is a stronger Ireland, with communities enriched by the contributions of people from around the world.

Our Background

Our Background

Founded in 2018 by a group of migrants and Irish allies, NEMI was created in response to the challenges non-EU residents face – from work permission hurdles to social isolation. What began as a small volunteer-led movement has grown into a nationally recognized initiative. We have built trust in migrant communities, forged partnerships with local organizations, and engaged with policymakers to drive positive change. Our history is defined by grassroots action and tangible wins (like expanded work rights for spouses of migrant workers in 2019), illustrating our commitment to both public engagement and policy impact.

Legal Status & Governance

NEMI is a registered non-profit organization (NGO) in Ireland, operating with full transparency and accountability. We are structured as a charitable company limited by guarantee, with no political affiliation. Our governance framework includes a volunteer board of directors (distinct from the advisory board) that oversees compliance, finances, and strategic direction. We adhere to Ireland’s Charities Governance Code, ensuring ethical practices and prudent use of funds. As a not-for-profit initiative, we rely on grants, donations, and volunteer support – and we are committed to using these resources to maximize impact for the communities we serve.
